In 1987 I was working at a restaurant in Santa Rosa, a skinny 20 year old wild wannabe.  I felt the call of the wild and the need to go explore the world, discover my destiny, live on the edge.  I quit two jobs and dropped out of college and ran off on my motorcycle for a while.

Right about that time John (Cougar) Mellencamp released [amazon_link id="B000001FMJ" target="_blank" ]Lonesome Jubilee[/amazon_link], characterized by songs like “Club Cherry Bomb”, “Paper and Fire”, and a few other good tunes.  This is the album that carried me through tonight’s work.  Mellencamp has taken some hard hits from the critics, but has always been himself, unapologetic and real.  I’m pretty sure I’ve written about his work in my blog before, and I surely don’t mind talking about it again.

One of the things I love about the album is the Americana in the music, represented by the fiddle and accordion.  The way these elements are mixed together with the rest of the ensemble, and flavored by solid backing vocals and  a firm drum beat, makes this one a pleasure to go back to time and again.

It must work for me, because I’m pretty sure it’s on its third play as I wrap this darn comic up…
